Adjustable Dumbbells for Bootcamp

Question

I am going to enter a bootcamp fitness class and they require light and heavy dumbbells. I am 5'-10" tall and 290 lbs. I will probably need a set of 10 pound dumbbells for the light weight and 20 or 25 pound dumbbells for the heavy weight.

Is there a set of adjustable dumbbells that I can bring to the class and interchange quickly and easily? Or should I just buy two sets of dumbbells of the appropriate size? Thanks, Dale Donnell.

Answer

If you've read my website or blog you know I'm a big fan of adjustable dumbbells for home workouts. However, in a bootcamp setting I think adjustable dumbbells will be a liability instead of an asset. Here's why…

A fitness bootcamp workout can be very hard on exercise equipment, especially dumbbells. You're going to be quickly shifting between exercises and changing weights on the fly with a very real chance of dropping your dumbbells causing significant damage to them.

On top of that, the last thing you're gonna want is to have to fumble around with changing weight settings when you could just drop your light pair of dumbbells and pick up the heavier set quickly and stay in the "bootcamp groove".
