Treadmill vs Road Running

There's a constant debate in running circles regarding a treadmill vs road running and which is the best option for training. I'll weigh in on this topic with my personal opinion and give you the pros and cons of each camp.

The primary reason most people run outside is the sheer simplicity, joy and low cost involved with the activity. When you run outside, all you really need to do is find a good pair of running shoes, throw on a pair of shorts and a t-shirt and hit the pavement (heart rate monitor optional).

Road running also has the benefits that you won't get on a treadmill:

  • camaraderie while training with a partner or group
  • varied terrain and terrain conditions (road vs trail running)
  • changing weather and wind conditions
  • beautiful scenery and people watching

On the other hand, road running isn't for everyone. I, for example, prefer running in the privacy and convenience of my home on my treadmill. There are definitely benefits to running inside that, for me at least, outweigh the positive aspects of running outside.

Here's why I like running on a treadmill:

  • easy to keep pace on machine with heart rate control
  • easier on joints with treadmill shock reduction in deck
  • do it while the kids are sleeping without leaving the house
  • don't have to dress up or down depending on weather conditions
  • watch tv while running to decrease boredom

Of course there are other considerations and pros and cons to a treadmill vs road running but for my money I like the convenience and control of running on a treadmill. It fits my lifestyle perfectly.

Here's a quick and easy treadmill reference guide to the best machines in each price range.
