Leg Press Machine
Question
Hi there. I am in need of good leg press machine for excercising and building up my legs. I have a good system with free weights for my upper body, but I really don't prefer excercises in which you hold weights in the hands, and leverage that into your leg muscles. I want all the work being done by just my legs.
What would be a low cost machine I could purchase for this that's under $250? Thanks - Bruce Peerson
Answer
If you're trying to build leg strength and power a leg press machine is a good choice for a home gym, but shouldn't be the only option you consider. Most people buy a leg press machine because its' a relatively safe option for using heavy weights without a spotter (I don't recommend lifting alone for safety reasons) and is easier on the back and knees when used correctly.
I had the Powertec Leg Press Machine (see picture on right) in my home gym at my old house that I liked a lot, but when I moved I had to downsize and get rid of some of the specialized equipment to make room for a treadmill, dumbells and stability equipment for my wifes personal training business.
If you want to build your legs, there are other options that you should also consider like squat stands, a leg extension and leg curl machine or doing deadlifts with an Olympic bar and weights.
I know you said you wanted a machine for under $250 bucks, but to be honest there isn't a great option in that price range for a machine. If you're unwilling to raise your budget I would either get a weight bench like the Powertec for leg extensions and leg curls.
Here are a few options for you to consider for building your leg strength at home:
- Squat Stands - You said you have free weights already. The squat isn't called the king of all exercises for nothing. Do squats if you're physically able and do then safely. You can get squat stands for a couple hundred bucks online by Body Solid.
- Do Deadlifts with and Olympic Bar - Yes, I know, the deadlift isn't a traditional leg exercise but it's a good choice for total body strength (and leg power) that you can do with an Olympic bar and weights. Just make sure to be careful you don't damage your floor by slamming the weights around.
- Leg Press Machine - Get a plate loaded leg press machine like the Powertec (like I had before I moved). The Powertec is a great unit for the price and will allow you to train your legs heavy in complete comfort and safety.
